Welcome to the Marshall University SENSORS CITY Site

The ultimate goal of this site is to learn about Intelligent Transportation Systems by hands-on projects and by teleoperation.

In programming and gathering data from the models you will learn about how traffic controls and city planning requires many people in engineering and in other related occupations. In moving a car around you will learn about how NASA scientists program remote robots. Because planets are far away, they can not control the rover in real time (like a video game) - but instead they write a program for the robot, send it to the robot and then the next day they get the results of their flight. Data needed to understand the future needs of a city also takes much time and use of computer. You will be working in a similar model here.

You may want to build the models in your classroom from the LEGO Dacta Cities and Transportation sets or other sets. Then, by looking at the CITY SENSORS website (simulated city), you can estimate the positions of the models at the 24 Hour CITY at the Nick J. Rahall, II Appalachian Institute and build up a similar city in your home or classroom. You will submit a number of ROBOLAB programs to control the CITY LEGO RCX (intelligent bricks). Test these programs first with the models you have built in the classroom or home. You can use programs from this site to get started.
